The Joint Commission showing up and going through every little detail of your hospital during a survey can be one of the most stressful times of your job, and receiving a citation can have significant repercussions for your facility. To help prepare, the Joint Commission releases the top citations they gave for the year, allowing facility managers to fix these issues before their inspection, saving them from a citation.
The most common citation the Joint Commission gave in 2014 was for an Environment of Care issue, with 56% of hospitals being cited for EC.02.06.01 (maintenance of a safe environment). Another major citation was IC.02.02.01 (reduction of infection risk from equipment, devices, and supplies), with 52% of all hospitals surveyed that year receiving this citation.
These citations for infection control issues put both patients and staff at risk by creating an unsafe environment and spreading disease. When patients are infected while at a hospital it can complicate their medical issue, extend their stay, drive up costs, and use up valuable resources. These will all make the hospital less efficient and cost more money to run, as well as lowering people’s perception of the facility.
With over half of all hospitals receiving these citations for infection risks, it would make sense for them to have Infection Control Consulting performed before the Joint Commission arrives. Luckily, enTaB provides services that help our customers avoid these Environment of Care citations, including Infection Control Designing/Consulting and Monitoring for Construction Projects, as well as Critical Room Pressurization Verification for ORs and all other existing critical rooms.
